Indeterminate Pepper Varieties

The cultivation of bell pepper in the summer cottage or garden today is available to everyone - there are a lot of varieties and hybrids on sale that are distinguished by unpretentiousness and resistance to external factors. Peppers for industrial cultivation stand out in a separate group, they can be:

  • intended for planting in open ground (field);
  • suitable only for growing in greenhouse conditions.

This article will consider the category of indeterminant peppers intended for both open-air and various greenhouses.

What are indeterminant peppers?

Some vegetables (peppers, tomatoes) are divided into categories according to the height of the bush and its branching. Sweet pepper can be:

  1. Indeterminate.
  2. Semi-determinant.
  3. Determinant.

Indeterminate varieties are distinguished by tallness - bushes grow to two or more meters. The leafiness of such plants is often strong. They do not like thick planting, shaded areas. High pepper bushes need good natural light and ventilation.

These cultures, most often, land in heated greenhouses. Among other things, they are distinguished by fast ripening periods (95-130 days) and high yields. Up to 18 kg of fresh vegetables can be removed from one bush.

The growth of a conventional (determinant) culture is suspended in a natural way - the bush does not grow after reaching a certain point (40-70 cm). But the indeterminant peppers do not stop growing on their own - they need to pinch and pinch.

This concerns not only the central escape, but also the lateral ones. It takes a lot of time to form a bush, and it will take a regular pinching. Only this way the pepper bush will be formed correctly, which will allow the plant to produce the most abundant crops.

Important! All these measures take a lot of time, however, they are justified by high yields.

Tall varieties of peppers are more often grown in heated (winter) greenhouses, which makes it possible to produce vegetables for a long period from April to October. However, there are varieties intended for ordinary greenhouses and even for open ground.

Peculiarities of indeterminate varieties

Despite the difficulty in the care of tall peppers, they are grown quite often. And not only in industrial conditions, but also in small areas and cottages. Pepper is suitable for cultivation for commercial purposes and for the family’s own needs.

The merits of indeterminate varieties include:

  • high yield, due to the long period of fruiting and the height of the bush, respectively, the number of ovaries;
  • unpretentiousness to air temperature and soil composition;
  • resistance to the most common diseases of solanaceous crops;
  • early ripening;
  • suitability for cultivation in any conditions (open or closed ground).

The disadvantages of tall crops include the fact that:

  • without sufficient light, plants shed their ovaries and flowers;
  • without airing the plants rot and get sick;
  • bushes need to pinch and pinch;
  • long stems need to be tied to stakes or trellis.

Buying the seeds of tall peppers, you need to be ready for more careful care of the plants, to provide them with enough space and the possibility of tying shoots.
