Feeding strawberries

After a long winter, strawberries, like all other plants, need feeding. After all, if the soil is poor, there is no need to wait for a good harvest. When the gardener removes the winter shelter, cleans the bushes from last year’s foliage, removes diseased plants, it will be time to feed strawberries. To choose the right fertilizer for strawberries, it is necessary to assess the condition of the plants, to know the age of the bushes, to analyze the soil.

Than to feed strawberries, what fertilizers for strawberries to prefer, how to determine the right time for dressing - this will be an article.

How to fertilize strawberries

Feed strawberries, as well as other horticultural crops, can be carried out both mineral and organic fertilizers. There is no unequivocal answer to the question of how better to fertilize the bushes: there are advantages to both the purchased complexes and household funds.

So, mineral supplements can be purchased at a pharmacy or in a specialized agricultural store. These compounds require accurate dosage, and sometimes adherence to the technology of preparation (dissolving in water, combining with other chemicals).

To accurately calculate the dosage of mineral fertilizer for strawberries, you must carefully read the instructions to the drug, as well as know the approximate composition of the soil. Too much chemicals will quickly burn leaves or roots, and strawberries can shed ovaries and flowers.

Important! Without a certain gardening experience, it is better not to use unfamiliar mineral fertilizers for strawberries.

Feeding strawberries with organic compounds is safer: the soil will take as much fertilizer as it needs. The only exception is fresh manure or bird droppings - such fertilizer for strawberry bushes is not used, manure must ferment.

It is very convenient and beneficial to mulch strawberry bushes with organic compounds such as compost or humus. The best time to make mulch is spring, while the bushes do not have flowers and ovaries. Putting once a layer of humus or compost, you can not worry about feeding strawberries until the end of the current season - the bushes have enough nutrients for good flowering and a bountiful harvest.

Attention! If for a long time the gardener used only mineral complexes for feeding strawberries, it is necessary to switch to organic fertilizers very gradually.

Plants are not accustomed to processing complex feedings, because they received the necessary substances in finished form.

The best option is considered to be combined fertilizing of strawberries using both organic and mineral substances. Such a balanced feeding will allow the crop to get decent, and not worry about an excess of toxins and the effect of berries on human health.

Top dressing of strawberry in the first year after landing

Schedule dressings and the amount of fertilizer for the bushes directly depends on their age. Very young plants planted last year, it is recommended to feed only mineral fertilizers.

The young strawberries have not yet been bearing fruits, the plants only increased the root system and the green mass, therefore the ground did not have time to be exhausted - all the substances necessary for the development and ripening of the fruits remained in the soil.

Mineral supplements are needed only to strengthen the immunity of strawberry bushes, to make them stronger in the fight against diseases and pests. An excellent fertilizer option for strawberries in the first year of her life will be a comprehensive feeding:

  1. Potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen must be mixed in equal proportions.
  2. Calculate the amount of fertilizer so that about 100 grams of the complex additive per one square meter.
  3. Mixed granules are scattered between strawberry bushes and loosen the soil a little to put fertilizer in the ground.

This method will allow fertilizers to gradually reach the roots, sucking strawberries from the soil along with water. A good harvest of large berries gardener provided!

The optimal time for the first strawberry feeding is April, when peduncles are just beginning to form on the bushes.

Spring feeding adult bushes

For several seasons, the strawberries absorb all the necessary trace elements and chemical compounds from the soil - the soil is depleted, so the berries are shallow, and the crop becomes poor.

It is possible to compensate for the lack of nutrients in the spring, when the earth has already warmed up and dried out a little, and the strawberries have awakened and started up young processes.

Old strawberries are usually fed three times:

  • as soon as the young leaves appear;
  • before flowering;
  • at the stage of formation of the fruit.

The first strawberry feed

The best fertilizer for strawberries in spring is organic. As soon as the bushes grow into growth, young leaves will start to appear on them, you need to remove last year’s foliage, clean the beds and apply fertilizer.

The land around the bushes must be loosened, trying not to damage the roots. Then you can lay chicken manure, cow dung or humus between the rows. It is advisable to cover the fertilizer with a layer of earth. Such additional feeding will additionally play the role of mulch, and the organic components will be absorbed by the roots of strawberries gradually, in the right amount.

If the land in the plot with strawberries is severely depleted, or perennial plants grow there, which have brought more than one crop, a more thorough approach is needed: a balanced complex of organic and mineral fertilizers is needed.

Prepare a top dressing like this: in a bucket of water, dilute 0.5 kg of cow dung, mix and add a tablespoon of ammonium sulfate to the same place. Each strawberry bush needs to be watered with about a liter of this fertilizer.

Second feeding

The time for the second feeding comes when the inflorescences form on the strawberry bushes. To bloom was abundant, and each peduncle turned into the ovary, the plants need to be further fertilized.

At this stage, it is advisable to use mineral supplements. This composition works well:

  • tablespoon of potassium;
  • two tablespoons of nitrofoski (or nitroammofoski);
  • 10 liters of water.

Each bush needs about 500 grams of such feeding.

Attention! Mineral fertilizer can only be at the root. If the composition falls on the leaves of strawberries, you get a burn.

The third stage of dressing

This stage of fertilizing should coincide with the period of formation of berries. To make the fruit large and tasty, it is better to use organic fertilizers, because minerals can leave in the berries are not very useful chemical compounds.

Weed infusion is considered a very effective and affordable fertilizer. For his preparation fit absolutely any weeds that can be collected specifically or use those that were weeded from garden beds.

Weeds need to chop, chopped them with a knife, and fall asleep in a container. It is better to use plastic containers for these purposes, since metal buckets can oxidize and react, spoiling the composition of the fertilizer.

Grass is poured with water so that it is covered. Capacity cover and put in a warm place for a week. During this time fermentation will occur, when the process is over, the solution is diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10 and watered strawberry bushes under the root.

Important! An infusion of weeds helps the strawberries to get stronger, form healthy ovaries, resist insect attacks and improve immunity.

Foliar top dressing of strawberry bushes

Many gardeners are concerned about the question: "Is it possible to feed strawberries in a foliar way?". Indeed, it is considered quite effective to feed strawberries by irrigating its leaves with a special nutrient mixture.

Treatment bushes can be performed using nitrogen-containing drugs. This fertilizer stimulates the growth and development of the bushes, and also has a positive effect on the formation of ovaries and their number.

Spraying strawberry bushes is even more effective than root dressing. The fact is that the leaves absorb nutrients much better and more quickly deliver them to all plant tissues.

Tip! To irrigate the bushes with mineral components is necessary in calm weather.

This is best done in the early morning or in the evening when the sun goes down. Suitable for foliar feeding and cloudy weather, but if it rains, the treatment will have to be repeated.

Strawberry leaves will gradually absorb minerals, so re-processing is required only in case of rain.

Recipes of folk fertilizers for strawberries

As practice shows, folk remedies are sometimes no less effective than specially selected mineral complexes or expensive organics.

There are some particularly successful recipes:

  1. Baker's yeast. The essence of feedings using ordinary baker's yeast is that they create an ideal environment for the reproduction of microorganisms. These microbes process the soil, releasing into it the nitrogen useful for plants. Thus, the soil is populated by the necessary organisms, it becomes nutritious and loose. The most common, but effective, recipe using Baker's yeast: a kilogram of fresh yeast is dissolved in five liters of warm water and a glass of sugar is added there. The composition will be ready when the fermentation process is over. Then 0.5 liters of fertilizer diluted in a bucket of water and use the mixture for watering strawberries.
  2. A mixture of yeast and black bread. To the usual yeast composition add the crust of any rye bread, the mixture is infused for several days and also used for watering strawberries.
  3. Spoiled milk. Strawberries fruit well on subacid soils, so the main task of the gardener is to reduce the level of soil acidity. Good help in this case, dairy products, such as yogurt, kefir, whey. Additionally, the earth is saturated with such trace elements as phosphorus, potassium, sulfur. In addition, sour milk can be made not only at the root, but also used for irrigation of the bushes: this will protect the strawberries from aphids and spider mites.
Attention! Using yeast as a fertilizer for strawberries, sprinkle the beds with wood ash.

The choice of fertilizer and adherence to the schedule of fertilizing - the key to a good harvest of tasty and large strawberries. In order to maintain the bushes, it is not necessary to spend money, strawberries can be fed with organic fertilizers or use folk remedies to feed it.
